Agra Fort

Agra Fort, a historic fortress in India, served as the primary residence for Mughal emperors until 1638 when the capital shifted to Delhi. A UNESCO World Heritage site, it stands about 2.5 km northwest of the renowned Taj Mahal, resembling more of a walled city.

Following the First Battle of Panipat in 1526, Babur, the victorious emperor, stayed at the fort and constructed a baoli. Humayun, his successor, was crowned in 1530 but faced defeat by Sher Shah Suri in 1540. The fort exchanged hands until 1556 when Humayun recaptured it. Akbar recognized its strategic location, making it his capital in 1558 and extensively rebuilding it with red sandstone.

During Shah Jahan's reign, the fort took its present form. Shah Jahan, known for building structures in white marble, erected the iconic Taj Mahal in memory of his wife. He dismantled some existing buildings within the fort to create his own structures.

Shah Jahan's later years were spent in captivity within the fort by his son, Aurangzeb, and it's believed he died in Muasamman Burj, a tower with a view of the Taj Mahal.

In the early 18th century, the Maratha Empire captured the fort, but it changed hands multiple times. After the defeat at the Third Battle of Panipat in 1761, the Marathas temporarily left the region. Mahadji Shinde eventually reclaimed the fort in 1785. The British seized control during the Second Anglo-Maratha War in 1803.

The fort played a pivotal role in the Indian Rebellion of 1857, leading to the end of the British East India Company's rule and ushering in a century of direct British governance in India. The rich history of Agra Fort reflects the complex tapestry of India's past.
